What we mean by Sacred Engagement
Engaging with the Sacred has always been challenging to describe. In this endeavor, we have been inspired by poetry, the arts, and the miracles of our lives. This is our best attempt at putting it into words.
Sacred Engagement is the practice of recognizing and partnering with an awareness that quietly infuses life—and doing so in two interwoven arenas:
Inward: We train attention to the interplay of body, mind, and emotion. Through simple practices—breath, inquiry, felt-sense awareness—we learn to notice what’s here, regulate when we’re stirred, and befriend our experience. Turning inward with gentle awareness is not an escape from life; it equips us to meet life directly, with clarity, choice, and compassion.
Outward: We also cultivate the relational field—the living space where self meets world: people, work, nature, community, art. Here, matter and mystery “dance” in interaction. When we extend outward in deep connection, something new emerges: conversations that lift both sides, collaborations that exceed any solo effort, moments of beauty that re-order our sense of what’s possible.
Many have tasted this already: moments of contemplation, a forest walk that quietly rearranges the nervous system, a hard talk that becomes healing, a melody that seems to play the listener as much as the instrument. Sacred Engagement names this bi-directional dynamic and trains one for it—so inner life and shared life rise together, and everyday actions become moments of meaning, service, and joy.
